I’d be so smitten to see ya.

Idle Hands is an awesome cozy venue lacking in hundreds of large screen tvs. They’ve been gracious enough to let Mike, Redboy and I control the sound system for the evening all while Mike and I also celebrate our Belated Birthdays alongside co-owner, Marc (did somebody say ‘shots’?) They’re also super incredible at selecting boutique brews, bourbons and whiskeys. A full bar for your other garden variety of drinks is available too, but I recommend you stick with what they do best and even ask one of the Bartenders for a recommendation.

We’re calling the night “All The ROCK You Want” because it spawned out of a conversation of … “Hey, Marc, what are we allowed to play?” and the response was…. “All the ROCK you want.” Mike and I thought that was a fitting and humorous title for us to vibe on for our little get together. It certainly ruled out that we would be throwing down any serious Four to the Floor beats all night (what we all typically play, right?), but, we kinda figured that given the Idle Hands Bar simple Mantra, ‘Bourbon. Beer. Rock.’ that that would be the case anyway.

Expect to hear a range of Alt Inspired Rock from 80′s, Early 90′s and even a few worthwhile bands of Today that you should be on top of if you’re not already (finger pointing at me). This DJ crew will most certainly try to one up the other from our Virtual Crates as we’ll be playing off our Laptop Traktor Rigs with a variety of Controller devices.

Hey Everybody, as suggested in a DJ Tech Tools Forum post, I decided to finally complete my Traktor Pro 2 Sample Deck Mapping for Decks 3 & 4 for the Korg Nano Kontrol. I thought that trying to add this new functionality into an already crammed feature filled Vestax VCI-100 (with 1.4 firmware) would be a little much. We will of course wait and see what the brilliant minds at the DJ Tech Tools Laboratories come up with and this template may end up going to waste for those that have that controller. For others, you may still see a benefit of using a dedicated Sample Deck controller using your Korg Nano Kontrol... Here you go, Enjoy!

*UPDATED* 7.11.11: I fixed one minor bug in Scene 1. Sample Deck 3 in Sample Slot 2 was missing the /2 and *2 loop length changes on the buttons. TSI is now at 1.1 inside the zip file.

Contents include the TSI to import into TraktorPro2 and a quick 2 page PDF explaining the mapping. I had to end up using two channels for a Sample Deck Slot in Traktor to get enough of the controls I wanted to tweak up font. That meant I required 2 Scenes for Deck 3 and then Deck 4. I suppose I could do some sort of lighter or basic mapping on Scene 4 as it is currently unused at the moment to fit both Sample Decks 3 and 4 .

Thought I’d share some ringtones I had edited down for my own iPhone usage and you may find useful to put onto yours.
Most of these are my own vinyl or cd rips that I then truncated down in iTunes and exported out as m4r files. A few are original creations from me. There is variety and different moods represented here. Some are pretty mellow while others are full on peak bidness. I tried to edit them down in a way so when the ring sample ends, it will loop back half way decently. Give’em a go… If I see a high download amount of these, it may inspire me to cut out and create more.

The story of Winter Mix 2011. I took advantage of being awake on New Year’s Eve after the ball dropped and Wife and Son fell asleep to get into the groove. Call it the Champagne for keeping me awake til 4 am (we are great friends). I had been contemplating this mix since mid December about what tracks may be nice for a blancodisco winter-themed dj mix. I mean, it had been ages since I’ve produced a mix for the masses to consume. I slowly collected tracks one by one over a few weeks and vacation that I thought would be fitting for the wintery groove. It was more downtempo and bell like in tones. But I knew I need to peak or get to that Underworld track, “Always loved a film”. One of my favorites this year. Don’t know what it is about that song, but, it just gets me and takes me back to a time where I once was, but this track was just yesterday. After peaking there, I tried to sustain the mood a tad longer and after that, the track selection was pretty freeform and not so pre-meditated. I just knew I wanted to continue playing music, and the result is the recording we have below.

Came across this sort of by accident by reading an article on the blog… slicingupeyeballs.com (an 80′s college rock band blog, it’s good).

Anyway, this documentary covers the formation of the band with Glen and Martyn being on camera. Unfortunately, one of the members, Ian, didn’t want to be a part of the Heaven 17 efforts anymore. Really down to earth view of the band. The documentary’s main focus is the making of the Penthouse and Pavement album and how it came to be. Not a studio/geek look, but the real life story outside of the studio. Also, a nice bit on how the split of the original Human League went down too with Phil Oakey.

If yer fan.. check out all 6 parts on youtube on VideodromeDisco’s Channel. Tons of other clips there too.

After watching, I actually felt sort of inspired to be creative again.. so… I must find something to do!

This video is a student’s senior thesis project on a proposed new dj system. Don’t know for sure what the engine is in the background as I doubt they also engineered there own DJ App. However, I have a hunch that it may be Serato given the fx names/types in the demo where this interface overlays the real dj software in the background. I’m highlighting this work because it shows yet more innovation in the space of new touch screen dj controllers. I’m not too keen on this interface for control myself, but I do like the minimal design look. The video brushes upon feeling a little hipster-ish. They try to promote that all a DJ should have to bring to a gig is a drive. But, that should already be the case today and it isn’t yet. Even with all the proliferation of laptop dj’s out there today, decks, cdj and analog mixers are still the main installs you see out and about at venues, not computers/laptops with an audio interface.

UPDATE (08.14.10):
DJ Tech Tools have just published article going more in depth behind the scenes with this DJ Concept. The video is essentially a hoax and the actual audio you hearing is not tied to a fully working touch screen interface. So…. not quite there yet technologically yet.

No, it’s not a new Erasure tune or solo track, but a philosophy that keeps the synth song writing machine percolating. This ‘Dell’ sponsored interview peers into Vince’s current home and studio called ‘the cabin’ way up in Portland, Maine. A room surrounded in perfectly mounted synthesizers becomes the envy of anyone who’s ever twisted a knob. The clip does a nice job touching upon some light history with Depeche Mode, Yazoo and the song writing process with Andy in Erasure. Towards the very end of the clip, Vince actually gets into some live programming on a Roland System 100 Modular synth sequencing a simple kick and snare rhythm. Kick it to full screen mode for maximum effect.
